How cold feelings and fatigue can destroy genuine affection.
Tatyana longs for romantic love in the Russian provinces, which she has so far only read about in books, and believes she has found the ideal partner in Eugene Onegin. But he abruptly rejects her. Only years later, when Tatyana is now married to Prince Gremin, does he realise that he made a mistake then.
In his most famous opera of 1879, Peter Tchaikovsky shows us the fundamental conflict of modernity: how cold feelings and weariness can destroy genuine affection. Alexander Pushkin's 1833 verse novel Eugen Onegin tells the story of a group of young nobles, of their desires, their arrogance, of devotion and rejection. But unlike Pushkin, who treats his characters with cool composure and sometimes even irony, Tchaikovsky is all about absolute identification: the gay composer experienced her painful love struggle with the female protagonist Tatyana. "Every opera subject appeals to me when I find people like me, who have the same feelings as me and whom I understand."
