Piano recital Venlo composers Gerard and Carl Hamm
The music of Dutch composers Gerhard Hamm (1838-1904) and his son Carl Hamm (1876-1937) came across the path of top pianist Camiel Boomsma by chance. After a recital by Boomsma, family Hamm, direct relatives, gave him a stack of scores. When Boomsma played through the pieces, he was struck by their delicacy and narrative power. The versatile composer Gerhard Hamm born in Trier later moved to Venlo. He was a very important figure in Venlo's cultural life. He was a teacher and conductor. Both Gerhard and his son Carl have a large musical legacy: from chamber music to songs and from orchestral works to pieces for solo piano. Gerhard Hamm (as Jocus music master) also wrote several waltzes, especially for the Jocus carnival celebrations in Venlo. Thus, to the tones of his 'Jocus Walzer', the Prince of Venlo is still being overtaken.
