Jazz festival Autumn Leaves returns to Venlo this year. After the successful editions of the past two years, next October and November will again be all about jazz. There will be 13 concerts in total, spread across various locations in the city. During the festival acts like Spark, Eric Vloeimans and Artvark Saxophone Quartet will play in Venlo. The world-famous drummer Sheila E. will also give a concert in Grenswerk. The festival will be closed by TaxiWars, the jazz band of dEUS-frontman Tom Barman. For the performances, single tickets are available as well as a passe-partout giving access to all shows.
Poppodium Grenswerk, De Maaspoort Theater & Events and Café Take Five have come together again and are organising a series of jazz concerts in the season that jazz seems made for, autumn. During the festival, concerts take place at Domani, Jacobskapel, Calico Jack, De Klep, Pelgrimshoès, Grenswerk, Maaspoort and Take Five.
The jazz month will be kicked off on Friday 4 October by Artvark Saxophone Quartet in Domani. The wayward saxophone quartet has distinguished itself for years with its adventurous groove and unusual line-up. On Sunday 6 October, Scratch Jazz takes place in Grenswerk. Scratch Jazz is a large coaching programme for young jazz musicians in the Venlo region. For four weeks, they follow intensive workshops by professional coaches, and at the end they will perform on stage in Grenswerk. Put the letters of the name of Dutch trumpeter Eric Vloeimans in a different order and you get Oliver's Cinema, the name of his acoustic trio with accordionist Tuur Florizoone and cellist Jörg Brinkmann. Melody, harmony and mysticism bring brilliant improvisations that transcend the jazz genre. Friday 11 October, live in the Maaspoort.
At a young age, Teus Nobel already toured throughout Europe with the Rotterdam Ska Jazz Foundation. Since then, he has worked with famous names like Kyteman Orchestra, Caro Emerald, Jef Neve and Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra. On Sunday 13 October, he will play with his Liberty Group in Take Five. At Jazz in De Klep on Monday 14 October during Autumn Leaves 2019, Roelofs has drummed up Venlo singer Kiki Manders and Cologne guitar virtuoso Philipp Brämswig.
Pierre and Barend Courbois, father and son, will give a special concert in Grenswerk Café on Friday 18 October. Two worlds come together: jazz and hard rock on one stage. Keyboardist Niels Broosen drummer Jamie Peet will perform on Saturday 19 October in streetwear shop Calico Jack, which will be transformed into a funky nightclub for the occasion. Their signature style and sound is somewhere between improvisation, analogue electronics, jazz and hip-hop. After 100 years, the typically American music of George Gershwin is given a new, contemporary twist. Known and unknown works will be heard in a unique line-up for voice, string quartet and jazz orchestra in 'Gershwin Celebration Tour', Sunday 20 October in De Maaspoort.
On Saturday 26 October, the band Sparkin TakeFive will play. Armed with Frank Montis' raw Hammond organ, Bas van der Wal's funky guitar and Anouk Verdonk and Salle de Jonge's creamy percussion and pounding drums. Mathijs Leeuwis has performed as a singer-songwriter for years and won the audience award of De Grote Prijs van Nederland in 2010. From small, dark and atmospheric to lyrical soundscapes, Leeuwis always brings it with conviction. His music is supported by images during the concert and will come in with a sledgehammer blow on Thursday 31 October in the intimate setting of the Jacobskapel.
Babs van Bree, Renée Steenvoorden and Robbert Suilen, or WANDER, get lost in melodies, improvisation and stories. On Saturday 2 November live in the Pelgrimshoès. On Sunday 3 November none other than Sheila E. will play in Grenswerk. Drummer Sheila Escovedo (better known as Sheila E.) shared the stage or the studio with George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Billy Cobham, MarvinGaye, Diana Ross, Lionel Richie and many, many more musicians. The festival will be closed on 8 November by Taxi Wars, the jazz band of dEUS frontman Tom Barman. No endless jams, but a swinging groove and a raw edge. Or, as Barman himself describes it: hardcore jazz with a punky approach. This concert is organised in cooperation with Jazz Maastricht.
